“Wild Goose Chase”
“It’s ironic: our society loves the thrill of a hunt, but we don’t seek after God. We pursue romantic partners, chase dreams, follow our heart—but we expect God to come on our terms and eat from our hand. Instead of a Wild Goose, we’d prefer the Spirit to resemble the tame dove pictured in so many church murals—a soft white bird, small enough to be carried in one hand, cooing comfortably on a shoulder. We’re uneasy with the thought of the Wild Goose—unwieldy, unpredictable, uncontrollable, demanding our utter concentration, tearing the sleepiness of our souls with strident cries.”
This was my very first blog post, and it’s still one of my most popular! Its theme–living in step with the Spirit–is the heart of this blog. Read “Wild Goose Chase” now!

Taking Back Territory
It was the summer of 1987 when the land came up for sale. The old country estate that had sprawled across the green Arkansas valley was being parceled out after the death of the owner. The combination of its remote location and completely undeveloped nature coupled...
Hope and the Hay Bales
All summer long, I enjoy my daily run on the country back roads that most cars forget, roads that are relics of a time when reaching point B as fast as possible wasn’t nearly as much of a priority. Day after day, under the dome of the summer sun, I run, feet slapping...
Heaven and the Hummingbird
They’re a cross between butterflies and birds, the beautiful ballerinas of nature, the glittering aerialists that whirl effortlessly through the summer skies. I’m referring, as you may have guessed, to hummingbirds. It’s ironic—hummingbirds are the smallest of...
Heart of the Mountains
There are places so deep in these mountains, Too deep for adventure to find, Where silence suspends like a cobweb, And nature obeys outside time. A thousand springs’ worth of wildflowers Have reached to the sky all unknown, And rocks that were hewn by the Ice Age Are...
Elephant Hills
I am watching the lumpy swell of mountains against the horizon Wrinkled like the skin of the elephants that once held up the world Ridged like their bony uncomplaining shoulders. Did those elephants ever tire? But someone has to be the quiet...
Birthday Candles
Another mountain autumn. Cloud-curls shed confetti, And silver frost is wrapping every tree in ribbons. Another year Is layered on my face. I am a tree, Adding rings each season, and I fight To keep my skin from growing hard, to keep the green Still dripping in...
Good and Bad and the In-Between
I just finished it this week. My most recent writing project, one big enough to deserve color-coded outlines and a notebook full of research materials, which I will unreasonably hang onto even though they have served their purpose. It’s an accomplishment eleven months...
Daytime Dark
Yesterday, I stood in daytime dark and saw the light. Like over two hundred million other people across North America, I had the amazing opportunity to see one of nature’s rarest phenomena—a total solar eclipse. In fact, my home in Arkansas lay squarely in the...
Bluebird Blessing
The bluebird box has been there for years, decades even. It’s nothing impressive to look at—just a simple cedar box mounted to a rusty T-post and sheltered under a spray of spirea and a slender pear tree. Like most things that have lived patiently through the swirl of...
Be Thou My Vision
Be Thou my vision… The prayer floats skyward, whispering across the short-shaved crop fields—a plea to see. Here, where the land leaps forward, my gaze is stretched for miles. O King of my heart… Here, in the wildness of the high grasslands, the horizon embraces us...
Catch the Glow
In the crackling dusk of a Rocky Mountain evening, I have come to catch the glow. It’s the day after Thanksgiving, and I’m standing on the sidewalks of Estes Park, waiting for the wonder to begin. Tonight is clear, a blank between two snowstorms—one that whirled...
Thankful Even in This
“Thanksgiving should be celebrated in the spring.” Thus declared the famous Canadian author L. M. Montgomery. She further explained her opinion with these words: “I think it would be ever so much better than having it in November when everything is dead or asleep....
Just in Case
It hit me as my family was preparing for a recent trip to Colorado: I don’t know how to pack. Oh, don’t get me wrong—I’m not lacking in the mechanics of packing. In theory, I perfectly understand how to create a thoughtful list, organize it into sections, efficiently...
Where the Wings Rise: Special Edition Blog Post!
Friends, the release of my novel, Where the Wings Rise, is less than a month away! So, to celebrate, I’m doing something a little different: today’s blog is based not on an encounter I’ve had in nature, but on an event that takes place within the pages of my book! ...

I couldn't be more excited to have my writing friend Hannah Linder on my blog today! Hannah is not only an award-winning author of Christian regency romance but also an incredibly talented international cover designer. (Look at my most recent cover, and realize that...
